This long narrow room was not showing itself off at its best.

The room needed to be furnished so that the buyers could imagine how they might use the room and be able to watch TV, sit and talk with friends and not feel like they were sitting in a corridor.

Firstly I installed a set of sliding panels to demarcate the living room and the conservatory that was just beyond. The sliding panels also helped to cut down the glare of daylight during the day and create a more intimate room at night.

Painting the walls a richer colour also gave this room a more welcoming feel.

Taking care with the style of furniture by using pieces that have a small foot space and simple unbulky shapes. Choose furniture that has 'see through' features, like the tubular steel and leather chair. Make these more comfortable with soft cushions and throws.

I needed to create a space for the flat screen TV and also a space to display some pretty objects. We used floating shelves (covering the low radiator that ran along the right hand wall.

Adding a long mirror to this wall helped to widen the room and create a 'window' effect.

Some simple artwork using the accent colours in the room helped to create some drama on the otherwise bare walls.

To further evoke a feeling of warmth we used floor standing lighting that was both practical and sculptural.

Create some natural art using foliage. This gives a fresh feel to a room but is less stiff than artwork.

Candles help to add warm local pools of light in areas of the room.

An area rug helps to create a defined seating area and softens the room's hard edges.

Use the accent colours in the vases, cushions and throws. These can be changed with the season to change the mood of the room.
